Each State has different requirements to become a firefighter.
Most follow the NFPA 1001 standard for firefighter criteria.
Each fire department or district can have stricter requirements to join, but not more lenient, than the State minimum.
For example, your State may not require you to have an EMS card to be on a fire department, but your department may require you to have an EMS card within a year of appointment to the department or in order to sign up for on-call shifts.
